Nasir Al- Molk the pink mosque
Pink mosque: Nasir Al-Molk Mosque is one of the oldest mosques in Shiraz city and one of the most beautiful places in Iran. This mosque is also known as the Pink Mosque or the Rainbow Mosque. Nasir Al-Molk Mosque is like other mosques from the outside, but with the rising of the sun, it turns the architectural art of the mosque into a large kaleidoscope.
Sunlight passes through mosaic windows, painting walls and floors with hundreds of colors. Nasir Al-Molk or pink mosque is the most valuable mosque in Iran from the point of view of tiling and is unique in the world from the point of view of construction, especially Mogharnas. This mosque is made of colored glass and is famous for the colorful lights that enter through the glass during the day and the special beauty that is created in the mosque. Since red glass dominates other colors, the golden ray of the sun combines with the red of the glass, causing the courtyard of the mosque to be seen in pink. That is why this mosque is known as the Pink mosque in the world.
This building was built by order of Mirza Hassan Ali Khan, nicknamed Nasir al-Molk, who was one of the nobles of Shiraz. It was built and its architecture was the work of Mohammad Hassan Memar.
Its construction lasted about 12 years and from 1255 to 1267 solar years. Also, the colorful doors and windows of the nave of this building were built by two great masters of Shirazi carpenter named Master Mohammad Jafar and Master Mohammad Rahim at the time of construction of this building.
Nasir Al-Molk or pink mosque has been reconstructed in different periods.
Repair and maintenance of this magnificent building in accordance with international standards has begun many years ago. According to available documents, the mosque has two major repairs. It dates back to more than 70 years ago and apparently had no restoration other than repairing the floor covering. The second repair started in 1370 and continued until 1385, which has been repaired almost everywhere. The colored glass of Nasir Al-Molk Mosque was also reconstructed in 1969 by Mirza Ayat.
The main entrance of Nasir Al-Molk or pink mosque is made of seven-color tiles with many decorations of red flowers and irises. The entrance of this mosque is a wooden door that has a stone frame with Islamic ornaments and a large integrated stone, and above the stone frame is a small inscription that is written in stone with the poem of Shurideh Shirazi and the date of construction of the mosque. When we enter Nasir Al-Molk Mosque, it goes to the corridor with a 90 degree turn on the left, which connects to the courtyard of the mosque. This entrance is made of bricks and is only symmetrically octagonal. At the bottom of this entrance is written Saadi’s famous poem and the name of its architect. All around this mosque is decorated with seven-colored tiles. Nasir Al-Molk Mosque has two porches. The north porch, which is eight meters high, and the south porch, which has no special use, have been built to be symmetrical with the north porch.
Nasir Al-Molk Mosque has two western and eastern naves. The eastern nave is the winter nave which is towards the qibla, which is designed to prevent direct sunlight and warm the nave. The western nave is one of the most beautiful naves of mosques in Iran, which was decorated with tiles and bricks with paintings of roses, but repairs were made about 70 years ago, which covered the turquoise tiles.
Nasir Al-Molk Mosque is generally made of bricks, but tiles have been used to avoid the uniformity of the facade of the mosque. The architecture of Nasir Al-Molk Mosque is related to the Qajar dynasty. Quranic verses are written on it.
The mosque has a large courtyard which is located on the north side of the mosque. The entrance has a large arch, the roof of which is decorated with colorful tiles. The entrance doors of this mosque are two large wooden doors with a poem by Shorideh Shirazi written on marble.
The mosque has two porches, north and south, which are not similar, and the north porch is more beautiful than the south porch. The north porch has three half-arches on three sides and leads to the courtyard from the fourth side. Also, this porch has 4 pavilions and its middle roof is decorated with Mogharnas work and five bowls.
